Cucalorus
So for the Cucalorus film festival, I went to go see a
couple of shows that weren’t film related that I ended up really enjoying. This
first one of those shows was the comedy show at Dead Crow Comedy Club. Mo
Alexander was the headliner for the show. Before Mo went on, there were a few
others before him. Two of the performers were from Canada and both were obsessed
with the fact that this was where Dawsons Creek was filmed. The other performer
was from here. He actually was named Port City’s Best Comic and was extremely
funny. After that Mo went on to perform and the jokes were just as hilarious.
He was a bit drunk when he went on which made things even funnier and he
interacted with the crowd a lot which was awesome. After the show had ended, my
boyfriend and I ended up at the PsyloJo concert. They were performing at the
Whiskey. The was nice and they were a Phish cover band. I grew up listening to
Phish, so it was a nice ending to a really cool night.
One of the shorts that I really loved was one called August.
We made it to the Barn Door shorts and saw a few. August stood out to me because
from my point of view it was aesthetically pleasing. The story is that it has
been hot and humid in Louisiana because its been August for 16 years. The set
design was amazing. The entire house was made to look like a post-apocalyptic world.
The whole short was shot with tones of greens, browns, and blues. Those are
personally my favorite colors to work with. The shots in beautiful, especially
when both characters are seen together being intimate. The sound design was awesome.
I liked the part where it looked like she was deep frying dog food in a cast
iron skillet. Caitlyn Greene did an excellent job.
Overall I wish I had had more time to go to more events. I wish I got to see feature films and more of the artsy stuff as well.I work full time as well as go to school full time so it was really difficult to try and pack everything into one single night. I think the festival is a great opportunity for film makers and cant wait for next years festival. Hopefully I will be able to make it to more shows if not volunteer!
